I spent my Friday night watching 色戒 and I think it makes more sense to express myself in Chinese. I am emotionally turmoiled by the movie. But I find it a great movie. I watched the uncut version and seriously, the sex scenes are over-rated. I loved the storyline so much more than how the sex scenes are portrayed. But I guess the sex scenes are a crucial part in illustrating the pain the main actress, Mai tai tai have to go through.
I think this is officially one of my favourite Chinese movies. The whole plot as well as how the actors portray their characters, especially Tony Leung and the main actress, Tang Wei. The pain that Tang Wei had to go through during the sexual courses with Tony Leung was all forgotten because of the love she felt from him. This made the twist in the story. The simple act of love. True love. But was it true love for Tony Leung? Maybe. The decision he had to make to execute them. The pain on his face. The longing as he sat on Tang Wei’s bed. But was it lust or was it love?
The “love” she felt made her betray everything she had worked so hard, endured so much. The “love” she felt made her love Tony Leung back.
The “love” she felt made her a traitor in the eyes of the nation.
Was it worth it? Was the “love” she felt worth the sacrifices she make? Only she could tell. Only the person involved could tell.
I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer. Although I find the ending a bit too hard to accept, I learn to accept it and probably Lee Ang wants it that way precisely. To make people go through the turmoil of thinking what is truly “right”. And to make things worse, it does not happen in the 21st century, but in the war-torn
Those who have yet to watch it, please watch it! Especially if you love the element of arts intertwined with history. The sex scenes are important but over-rated, what truly makes the movie stands out is the whole plot and how the actors portray their characters. Kudos to the actors and actresses. They had really done a great job in bringing out the character. It is so hard to capture their true emotions, and that was exactly what Lee Ang wants I think: to make people think after the movie. Also I love the linkages made to the various scenes. She holding the suicide pill while on the tricycle after letting off Tony Leung, as if knowing what is coming next. The various conversations that always seemed to be a prelude of what's going to happen next.
Love it!
